Job Summary:

The Coding Specialist I is responsible for reviewing, coding and abstracting inpatient and/or outpatient medical records.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED with two years coding experience relevant to the position as follows:

  • Inpatient positions: experience in ICD coding and assigning DRG’s/APCS’s;

  • Outpatient positions: experience in outpatient coding and assigning ICD and CPT.

Formal coding education preferred.

Licensure/Certification: Must have CPC, CCS or CCS-P. May have a CCA with 5 years of relevant experience.

Knowledge/Skills: Requires working knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT4 coding and guidelines and principles. Requires knowledge of medical terminology. Knowledge of anatomy and physiology preferred. Computer experience helpful. Requires the ability to work independently and as a team member. Requires ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information. Requires the ability to effectively communicate with clientele and other personnel, especially physicians

Other: Employees located in Physician Billing and Collections departments (01-7310, 50-7310, 50-7332, 50-6009, and 10-6954) are required to work a minimum of one weekend a month along with occasional holiday work. Overtime will vary with workload and employee must be available for overtime according to business needs.
