SC Department of Public Safety Juvenile Specialist I-Transport-CIOC in Richland County, South Carolina

Job Responsibilities

Under general supervision, exercise safety, security, control and supervisor of juveniles assigned for secured transportation from secured facilities, marine institutes, wilderness camps, treatment facilities and group homes. Maintains appropriate control, safety, security and supervision of juveniles assigned for secured transportation. Supervises and directs all juvenile movement while in custody and under supervision. Makes predetermined and random security checks of juveniles being picked up, while traveling and at deliver site. Observes and reports activities of juveniles; involved with security transportation. Counsel juvenile while on secured transportation if their behavior warrants interventions. Checks, cleans and report any damage to transport vehicles daily and make sure vehicles are in a safe operating condition. Keep accountability of all mechanical restraints, radios, documentation and keys. Conducts strip/frisk searches of juveniles. Attends training and maintains certification required by the Continuing Law Enforcement Education. Performs other related duties as required by a supervisor.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

State Requirements: A high school diploma.

Agency Requirements: Must be 21 years of age, have a high school diploma or GED and valid driver's license. Must have the ability to meet and maintain certification by Continuing Law Enforcement Education (CLEE) within (6) months of employment. Must be able to pass all required exams and performance assessments. Must have a valid SC driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications

Knowledge of state laws/institutional rules/regulations/guidelines for the custody, control, and supervision of juveniles. Knowledge of SC Child Abuse statutes. Knowledge of purpose/methods/practices of secure facilities. Knowledge of various methods of instructing /handling/supervising juveniles in various activities. Ability to pass a competency examination on SCDJJ Policies and Procedures and Institutional guidelines and procedures. Ability to meet and maintain certification under the SC Continuing Law Enforcement Education. Participate physically and successfully complete the agency's Handle with Care training which includes the Primary Restraint and Take Down techniques and on-the-job functions but not limited to: Handcuffing (hands extended behind back), prone positions (flat on stomach and/or back), Kicks and Strike Motions, Joint Manipulations, bending at the waist and torque motions. Lifting hands above the head, lifting 50+ pounds, and repeated breathing (inhaling/exhaling) techniques for CPR/First Aid/AED. Must be able to kneel, bend and stand unsupported. Work in extreme climates /inclement weather; safely operate a motor vehicle to include having a valid state issued driver's license. Walk and/or stand extended periods of time, visually distinguish between subjects and objects at distances of up to 75 yards with or without corrective lenses, must have the ability to wear protective equipment in case of emergencies. Essential Position that is under general supervision; work reviewed by supervisor on a daily basis; annually scheduled performance reviews. Willing to work any shift and stay over if necessary. This position performs job duties relating to the custody, control, transportation, or recapture of juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice, and the employee may have direct and indirect contact with juveniles within the jurisdiction of the department of juvenile justice. Training applicable to these duties will be provided.
